Description

This canal warehouse, built between 1774 and 1780, is situated at Aspley Basin. It was constructed for Sir John Ramsden’s canal, initially surveyed by James Brindley and eventually built by Luke Holt. The building is of hammer-dressed stone, with a pitched stone slate roof. It is three storeys high, with an additional attic level. The central gabled portion projects slightly and features a range of panelled loading doors, with a round-arched opening on the attic floor. To the left is a three-light stone mullioned window and a two-storey extension to the north. To the right are a three-light stone mullioned window on the ground floor, a nine-light stone mullioned window on the first floor, and two three-light stone mullioned windows on the second floor. A Venetian window with a keystone is located on the attic floor at the west end. A range of panelled loading doors with balconies are at the canal-side end of the building, with a winch hoist visible above.
