Description

Royles Head Farmhouse dates to the 17th century, with later alterations and additions in the 18th and early 19th centuries. A datestone inscribed "1161" is visible on No. 27. The farmhouse is constructed of hammer-dressed stone, with a pitched stone slate roof. It is two storeys high. Surviving elements of the original 17th-century layout are the doors at either end of the screens passage. The south-facing door has a four-centred head with hollow spandrels and a moulded surround, while the north-facing door has a plain chamfer.

No. 23 features a four-light mullioned window and a three-light mullioned window on the first floor, and a five-light mullioned window on the ground floor, all in stone. An eastwards extension, rendered and with mainly 19th-century windows, possibly represents a former parlour wing. No. 25 has an eight-light stone mullioned window on the first floor (with two lights blocked) and a seven-light stone mullioned window on the ground floor. A north-facing wing, likely dating to the 18th or early 19th century, has modern windows. No. 27, also rendered, may represent a former office wing, and has two two-light stone mullioned sash windows with arched frames on the first floor and a four-light stone mullioned sash window on the ground floor.
