Description

Holmefield is a large house dating from the mid-19th century. It is built of hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and has a hipped slate roof. The house is two storeys high, featuring a moulded eaves cornice and rusticated quoins. The front facade is characterised by two two-storey canted bays. Each bay has Tuscan piers and an entablature on both storeys, framing a former front door with eclectic pilasters and an entablature that incorporates side lights. Above this is a pair of round-arched sash windows with moulded imposts, a voussoir keystone, and a cornice. The south side of the building displays further Italianate detailing, including a three-storey tower with a balustraded parapet and balconies supported by scrolled consoles at the second floor level. A tripartite round-arched staircase window, featuring stained glass depicting wildlife and sporting scenes, projects into the re-entrant angle. A one-storey quadrant bay, also within the re-entrant angle of this and the main block, has a parapet in a fin-de-siècle style and three round-arched windows with stained glass. The interior retains elaborate joinery and plasterwork, including a staircase with a brass Art Nouveau torchiere on the lowest newel post.
