Description

The Old Clergy House, located on Stocks Walk in Almondbury, was built in 1898 and designed by architect Edgar Wood. This two-storey building features hammer-dressed stone and a pitched stone slate roof. At the west end, there is a gabled wing with coping on cut kneelers and a chimney that is corbelled out from its east wall. A wooden porch is situated in the re-entrant angle of the building.

The south front has two three-light windows on the first floor, a four-light window on the ground floor, and a side light next to the door. The west wing includes a four-light window and a smaller two-light window on the first floor, along with a four-light twin-transomed window on the ground floor. The west side is supported by four raked buttresses and features a blocked door with a semi-circular stone hood above a two-light fanlight.

At the rear, there is another chimney corbelled at first floor level and a canted staircase projection with a hipped roof. All windows are fitted with square-sectioned mullions that are flush with the wall surface, and the ground floor windows in the bays have transoms. These windows are casements with lead glazing bars and ornamental iron fastenings.

Inside No. 2, there is a diagonally placed fireplace with a painted bronze surround that is embossed with stylised roses and bears the inscription "Parva Domus Magna Quies" in Art Nouveau lettering. The fanlight and sidelight of the inner arched door feature attractive stained glass with a twin bird motif.
