Description

The Huddersfield War Memorial is located at the south-west of the park, marking the end of the main east-west avenue that leads from the park's entrance in the south-east. The memorial is set on a terrace that surrounds a mound to the east and north, featuring two long, perpendicular retaining walls with circular bastion-like projections at the corners and ends, which serve as viewing platforms. These walls are made of rock-faced sandstone and match the walls of the nearby bandstand, which is also listed. The terrace includes ashlar balustrades with square and small circular openings, piers topped with ball finials, and heavy moulded copings. Stone staircases with low balustrade walls and squat piers provide access to the terraces on either side, with a second flight of stairs leading up to the war memorial. The main staircase on the east side is flanked by curved viewing platforms and piers adorned with cast-iron vases.

The war memorial itself is constructed from sandstone ashlar and stands on a circular platform at the top of the Belvedere. It features a tall, free-standing shaft with pilasters at the front and rear, and half-columns on the sides, all supported by a cruciform pedestal that rests on a two-stepped, square base. The shaft is topped with a deep cornice and a gilded cross, which is decorated with raised diamond and cabochon ornaments. The front of the pedestal bears the inscription: 1914 1918/ IN/ MEMORIAM/ 1939 1945. Behind the shaft is a semi-circular Tuscan colonnade that is two columns deep, with an ambulatory in between and an entablature that ends with paired compound piers featuring pilasters. The lower part of the back of the colonnade is enclosed by a wall, and modern railings surround the platform.
