Description
The fountain in the center of Greenhead Park, located opposite the entrance to Vernon Avenue, was built in 1888. It is constructed from ashlar and features four steps leading up to its base, which has projecting semi-circular bowls on gadrooned oriels. The structure is supported by eight fluted Tuscan columns, with two at each corner placed diagonally. These columns frame four semi-circular arches that include keystones and moulded voussoirs. The fountain also has a fluted frieze and a moulded cornice, topped with an ogee corona adorned with ribs and fleur-de-lys finials. Each side of the fountain is decorated with extensive strapwork cresting. A plaque on the fountain is inscribed with "THE GIFT OF SIR JOHN W RAMSDEN BART TO HUDDERSFIELD 1888."
