Description
The barn adjoining Brianfield Farmhouse is a cruck-framed structure that dates from the 17th century or earlier. The walls are made of coursed rubble and feature quoins. It has a stone slate roof, which has been partially repaired with sheet material. There are later 18th-century outshuts on the south side, and the main walls are mostly hidden by later lean-to extensions. Inside, there are three cruck trusses, with some blades resting on stone footings. The cruck blades are notably angular and include an upper collar. The tie beams extend into the walls, with one tie beam having a central section cut out. There are lever holes at the base of the blades, and the wall plates have been raised above the level of the extended tie beams during the stone walling process. This barn is referenced in "Early Timbered Buildings of the Huddersfield District" by James Walton, published in 1955.
