Description
Nos 1 and 2 Exchange is a handed pair of buildings dating from 1751, as indicated by the datestone. They are constructed from hammer dressed stone with rusticated quoins and ashlar dressings, topped with a stone slate roof (No 1 has a turned roof, while No 2 is covered in bitumen). The gable copings extend onto moulded kneelers, and there are moulded stone brackets present.
The buildings are two storeys high. On the south-east elevation, there is a string course between the floors. The two central doorways feature moulded ashlar surrounds with a pulvinated frieze and cornice, although one doorway has been repaired with mortar. Above the doors, the initials B.W.S. and the date 1751 are displayed. On the first floor, above the doors, there are two single light windows with moulded ashlar surrounds and raised sills. Flanking each side on both floors are bays containing 4-light stone mullioned windows with recessed mullions.
25 Church Street, which is under the same roof, is noted to have no architectural interest.
