Holdsworth House with Wall and Gateway to Forecourt

Holdsworth House, dated 1633, is a substantial stone house built in a traditional style, featuring a stone roof. The south front showcases two gables with a two-storey gabled porch in between, all topped with finials. There is a similar cross wing on the east side. The house has long mullioned windows, most of which have transoms and are stepped to the west. It includes arched and moulded doorways, with the outer doorway featuring a dated lintel. The simple east return has some original windows, while the west return is rendered and has two mullioned windows, along with a long single-storey wing extending to the north. This wing has a gable at the north end and includes a foot gateway to an enclosed yard, which features a slightly decorated arched lintel and a carriage-archway inscribed with "W" over "ID" and dated 1680. There are modern extensions at the rear of the house. A coped wall encloses the forecourt, although it has been partly altered. The property is flanked by a pair of 17th-century gate-piers topped with ball finials and engaged Doric columns on the outer face. Holdsworth House, along with the adjacent buildings Nos 1 to 4, a barn behind Nos 1 to 4, Holdsworth Farmhouse, a barn, a cottage, and a gazebo, forms an important village group.
