Description

The building is the officers' mess for the former Wellesley Barracks, constructed in 1875 and designed by the Royal Engineer's architect. It features coursed and dressed stone with ashlar dressings and slate roofs that include five ridge stacks and a single gable stack, along with raised coped gables and kneelers. The structure is two storeys tall and has a main east facade with very irregular fenestration and Gothic Revival style detailing.

A projecting off-centre porch is supported by bold circular columns with foliate capitals and has pointed arches, topped with a hipped slate roof. The inner doorway features a chamfered surround and a 20th-century door, with two small sash windows above. To the left, there is a slightly projecting gable that contains two large cross mullion windows on the ground floor and three sashes under a single pointed relieving arch above, followed by a single-storey projecting wing with a canted bay front featuring cross mullion windows. To the right, there is a single sash window, then a pair of sashes on both floors, leading to another slightly projecting gable with three sashes below and two sashes above. This is followed by another pair of sashes and a single sash on both floors, with a slightly projecting gable end that has three sashes below and three tall narrow sashes above, all under a Gothic relieving arch.

Additionally, a small gabled porch projects from the right return, featuring a moulded doorway under a segmental head. This barracks complex was opened in 1877 as the recruitment and infantry training depot for the Duke of Wellington's (West Yorkshire) Regiment, known as the 'Dukes'.
