Description
The Commanding Officer's House at Wellesley Barracks, now used as an office, was built in 1875 and designed by an architect from the Royal Engineers. It is constructed from coursed and dressed stone with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs with raised and coped gables that have kneelers. The building has two tall external chimney stacks, quoins, and a plinth, and it stands two storeys high.
The main west front includes a central doorway with a glazed panel door and a wooden hood that has a segmental leaded top supported by wooden brackets. Above the doorway is a single window. To the right, a gabled wing projects slightly. On either side of the doorway are pairs of plain sash windows with segment heads, and above these are pairs of similar sash windows.
This barracks complex was opened in 1877 as the recruitment and infantry training depot for the Duke of Wellington's (West Yorkshire) Regiment, commonly known as the 'Dukes'.
