Description
Joseph Crossley's Almshouses, built in 1863 by R Ives, is a large Gothic structure consisting of three blocks arranged around a garden court. The building is two storeys high and constructed from stone with slated roofs. It features a central battlemented tower with a stair turret and a high roof on the west block, along with additional turrets, gables, chimney stacks, and cresting along the roof ridges. The windows vary in design, including one-, two-, and three-light configurations with flat and cusped heads, some adorned with tracery, as well as oriels and bay windows. There is a chapel located at the upper level of the west side of the south block, which has a high roof. The site includes bridges with steps leading to the upper levels of the north and south blocks, and there are varied terraces with steps and piers on the garden side of each block.
