Description

Clay House Barn is a large and impressive 17th-century aisled barn constructed from hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof. The barn consists of three or four bays, featuring an aisle only on the northeast side and a broad gable projection that reaches the full height of the central aisle on the southwest side. The southwest elevation includes a large square-headed barn entry with composite jambs. The wide gable protrudes from the main structure and has a low, sweeping roof on the sides. Centrally located in this gable is a doorway with a depressed arch, accompanied by a two-light chamfered mullioned window to the left. Above this, there are six arch-headed ventilators with spandrels arranged in a pyramid shape across three tiers.

The southeast end elevation also showcases a large gable with low walls and a long, sweeping roof, along with arch-headed ventilators. The northeast elevation features a break in the aisle with a square-headed barn entry at the arcade-plate position. The right-hand return wall of the aisle has a doorway with a four-centred head and chamfered jambs.

Inside, the barn is constructed using post and truss methods, with straight braces connecting to the arcade-plate and tie beam. It has a queen-strut roof, although not all of its elements are original.
