Description

1 Stonelea Drive is a former pair of cottages, now converted into a single dwelling, dating from the early 19th century with late 20th and early 21st century alterations. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a stone-slate roof and comprises 2 storeys plus a basement.

The building's origins as twin dwellings remain externally legible. The former no. 1 Delf Road occupies the south-west end, while the former no. 3 is positioned at the north-east end. A late 19th century house is attached to the north-east gable end and falls outside the listing.

The external window and door surrounds have been replaced, and windows now contain late 20th and early 21st century glazing. All elevations are repointed in modern cement strap pointing. The roof carries a ridge stack at each end, one of which has been rebuilt.

The four-bay front elevation (south-east facing) features paired central doorways separated by a downpipe. The left doorway contains a late 20th century 4-panel door with integral fanlight; the right doorway (from the former no. 3) has been converted into a window with a new surround and a utilities meter box inserted below. The outer bays on each floor contain 3-light mullioned windows, with an additional single window above the former no. 3 entrance.

The south-west gable end is largely blank but has modern ventilators set into the gable apex. As the ground slopes from front to rear, there is a 2-light mullioned basement window on this side.

A late 20th century 1½-storey lean-to extension, which replaced an earlier outshut, is attached to the rear (north-west) elevation in front of the former no. 3 section. This extension is not of special interest. Set further back, the rear wall of the original building has 3-light mullioned windows on both ground and first floors.

Internally, the ground floor comprises two rooms separated by a stair flight that originally served only no. 1. The corresponding stair flight from the former no. 3 has been removed. Openings have been cut through both floors to interconnect the cottages. Exposed machine-cut timbers survive on the ground floor, along with a timber beam on the first floor of the former no. 3. Late 20th century 6-panel doors are installed throughout. The south-west ground-floor room contains a rebuilt chimneybreast and a modern stone fireplace lintel obscuring an original damaged lintel behind. The north-east ground-floor room has a rebuilt chimneybreast with a stone fireplace containing a modern stove. Double doors in the north-west wall and stone steps descend into the late 20th century lean-to, which contains a modern kitchen and is not of special interest.

The stair flight to the first floor, located in the original no. 1, is enclosed with late 20th century turned balusters on the landing. Both first-floor rooms have been subdivided to create landing areas, bathrooms, and an additional bedroom. The landing in the former no. 3 provides access to the upper level of the lean-to extension, which is not of special interest.

The basement is situated at the south-west end beneath the section that formed no. 1, and was originally accessed via a stair beneath the main stair. The access stair has been altered and extended, now reached through an inserted doorway in the ground-floor room of the former no. 3. The basement consists of a single room with a stone-flag floor and a barrel-vaulted ceiling incorporating cast-iron hooks.
