Description

This is a terrace of workers’ houses located in Helen Street, Saltaire, built in 1857 as part of the Saltaire model village. The houses were designed by Lockwood and Mawson for Titus Salt. They are constructed from hammer-dressed stone, with Welsh slate roofs.

The terrace comprises 23 to 44 Helen Street. Most houses are two storeys high and have a single bay. The end houses are slightly larger, projecting forward with two bays, a round-arched doorway, and a round-arched window. The ground floor windows have square heads, aligned with a sill band. The rest of the houses have plain doorways and one window to each floor, with some having inserted bathroom windows. Some houses have been rendered. Wooden brackets support the gutter along the end houses. The buildings have hipped roofs, with two-bay return elevations to the end houses.

The end houses are more elaborately designed due to their visual importance when viewed from Caroline Street and Titus Street.
