Description
Buttershaw Mill is a large worsted mill built between 1851 and 1852 by the firm of S Bottomley and Brothers. It is set back from the road in an unusually open site and remains virtually unaltered since its construction in the mid 19th century. The mill is made of sandstone "brick" and features a plain four-storey and attic design, with a long range of 22 marginal glazed windows that have thin lintels and ashlar sill bands.
At the south-west corner, there is an ornate stair tower that includes two arched lights on each side, along with similar openings at the top of the tower, which is capped with a pyramidal lead roof and a decorated iron weathervane. The roof of the mill is slate with coped gable ends and corbel brackets at the eaves.
Connecting the main mill to the low parapeted weaving shed is a 2½-storey engine house, which has a triangular pediment and features two tall round-headed windows on the first floor with grooved ashlar surrounds, as well as two smaller windows on the ground floor linked by an impost string. The rear elevation of the spinning mill has a bowed stair tower at its center. Inside, a central row of cast iron columns supports timber cross beams. The chimney stack located to the north of the mill has been shortened.
