Description

Nos. 1 to 36, Southfield Square form a circa 1840-50 terrace of two-storey houses which create the south side of the square. This is a unique type of square in Bradford, with only Hanover Square being comparable, although Hanover Square is slightly earlier in date. The houses are built with cut gritstone, coursed to brick size, and feature an ashlar frieze and a moulded gutter cornice. They are topped with slate roofs and each has two windows on the first floor and one on the ground floor. The doors are four-panel affairs with rectangular fanlights, topped by pediments supported by deep, fluted console brackets. The entire terrace is included on the list for group value. No. 1 has a bowed corner with an inset area and a shop on the ground floor, which returns one bay to Lumb Lane, maintaining similar architectural details.
