Description

The former bakery adjoining numbers 9, 11, and 11A on Thirlwell Road in Sheffield is a building that dates back to around 1850, with some alterations made in the late 20th century. Originally known as the Midland Confectionery Works, it was built around 1879 for William Pike. The structure is made of brick with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs.

The house on the right side is two storeys tall and has a two-window range. It has a plinth, a wooden eaves board, two gable stacks, and a rendered right gable. Each floor contains two late 20th-century top-hung glazing bar casements. The central entrance features a renewed panelled wooden doorcase with a cornice, a four-panel door, and an overlight. To the left, there is a slightly lower entrance bay with a similar casement above and an elliptical arched cart entrance with a keystone below. At the rear, there are two-storey and single-storey outbuildings and additions from the mid-19th century and late 20th century, which are linked to the bakery.

The bakery itself is three storeys high and has an overhanging canopy at the front gable, along with a factory-style round ridge stack. The front gable features a central loft door flanked by two single 2-light casements on a sill band. Above this, there is another loft door flanked by small single casements. A wooden hoist beam is positioned above the door. On the ground floor, there are three 2-light transomed casements with overlights, all of which have slight segmental heads. The right return has three small boarded openings on the second floor, while the left return has a loft door on the first floor, flanked to the right by a segment-headed 2-light casement and to the left by two boarded windows. Below this, there is a door with an overlight, flanked to the left by two smaller blocked openings and to the right by a larger window. The interior has not been inspected.
