Description

A pair of barns, likely dating from the 17th century, with a 20th-century link building, stand opposite Number 3 High Street. Constructed of irregularly-coursed rubble, the barns have stone-slate and 20th-century cement-tile eaves courses to pantile roofs. They are arranged in an L-shape, with one barn facing the road and a further range at a right angle, linked by a 20th-century building. The roadside barn is two storeys high with three bays, featuring large quoins. A large double door is located to the left of the centre, with a wood lintel, slit vents, and a slatted casement to its left, and a boarded hatch above. An inserted door is on the right, alongside a double-chamfered mullioned two-light window, and a similar window above without a mullion. External steps lead to a door in the return wall. Shaped kneelers and gable copings are present on this range. The second barn range is also two storeys high with three bays and quoins. Two ground-floor doorways have deep lintels; the left doorway has a slatted window to its left, while the right doorway is flanked by casements, and slit vents are visible on the first floor. This barn also features shaped kneelers and gable copings. Inside, both ranges have principal-rafter trusses, with some windbraces. The barns now function as stables set within the grounds of The Fold, Wadsworth Close.
