Description
The iron gate opposite the entrance to the Masonic Hall on Tickhill Road is likely from around 1839, the same period as the Chapel of the Hospital of St. Mary Magdalene. This gate is made of wrought and cast iron and serves as a double pedestrian gate. The gate piers consist of four rods set in a square base, featuring moulded ornamentation at the base and partway up each rod, although some of this ornamentation is missing. The tops of the piers are connected by cast-iron entablature blocks, each adorned with a fluted frieze and a twisted wrought-iron finial. The gates themselves have plain dog bars with turned finials above a mid-rail, and the main bars also feature similar finials above the top rail. The hanging and meeting stiles end in scrollwork. The piers are connected by an overthrow, which is likely of a later date. This gate is included for its group value with the Masonic Hall.
