Description
The monument, located approximately 8 metres to the east of Wood Hall, dates back to 1714 and was erected for Robert Molesworth M.P. in memory of his dog. It is made of ashlar magnesian limestone or weathered marble and features a square pedestal topped with a vase. The pedestal has a moulded plinth with fielded panels on two sides, which bear long inscriptions (mostly indecipherable) and a depiction of the dog, along with a cornice. The vase is inverted pear-shaped, has an octagonal base, a turned foot, and gadrooning.
Molesworth used Edlington as a country estate and was responsible for planting large areas of the existing woodland, with the monument serving as its centrepiece. It commemorates a dog that is said to have saved Molesworth from being shot by an intruder. The Latin inscription is believed to have been written by Dean Lockyer of Peterborough, a friend of John Dryden, and praises the dog's virtues, concluding with the lines:
'That master, not unmindful of his merits,
with tears, within this marble urn
hath placed his dead remains
M. F. C. 1714'
Since the mid-18th century, the monument has been noted as a landmark by topographers.
