Description
The gateway and flanking walls, located approximately 8 metres east of Hill House, serve as the pedestrian entrance to Campsmount and date from the early 19th century. They are constructed of rubble magnesian limestone with ashlar dressings. The central feature is a round-headed, boarded door set within a square-headed ashlar surround, flanked by projecting piers. The concave wing walls curve down and then up to similar end piers, creating a graceful curve. The structure is topped with ashlar copings, and each pier has a band beneath a pyramidal cap. This gateway provides access to a wooded walk leading to Campsmount, which was the 18th-century home of the Yarborough family and George Cooke-Yarborough from 1802 to 1818. Although the main house was demolished in 1959, the farm buildings of Campsmount Home Farm remain.
