Description
The Rossington War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1944, with later additions for conflicts in the 20th century. It is made of granite, concrete, brick, and bronze and is located on a corner site next to the churchyard of the Church of St Michael.
The memorial features a simple rough-hewn Greek cross with a tapering four-sided shaft, which is mounted on a tapering rectangular pedestal. This structure is raised on a secondary brick plinth, topped with a projecting coping stone that consists of a plain concrete slab.
On the north-east side of the pedestal, there is a shallow rectangular recessed ashlar panel with an inscription in lead lettering that reads: "TO THE MEMORY OF THE FALLEN. 'WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.' A TRIBUTE FROM THE ROSSINGTON BRITISH LEGION. WOMEN'S SECTION. 1944." Additionally, a rectangular framed bronze tablet is placed against the plinth, which states: "IN MEMORY OF THE FALLEN OF THIS VILLAGE WHO PAID THE SUPREME SACRIFICE FOR US AND THE COUNTRY, WE WILL REMEMBER THEM. THEY DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE IN PEACE." The names of the Fallen are listed on the tablet under date headings: 1914 - 1918 (25 names), 1939 - 1945 (43 names, including two women), and POST 1945 (six names).
