Description

The Mill Building attached to Mill House and the tail-race tunnel arch beneath Mill House is a water mill, likely built around 1786, although it has been altered over time. Constructed from rubble magnesian limestone with a stone slate roof, the building stands three storeys high and features two openings on the first floor, along with a two-storey wing at the rear right. The corners of the building are accentuated with quoins. To the left, there is a doorway framed in bonded ashlar with a two-piece round arch, while an unglazed casement window to the right is set beneath a segmental brick arch. On the first floor, there is a window to the right similar to the one below, and another doorway on the left with an arch matching that of the entrance. The second floor has two wooden-framed openings beneath the eaves. At the rear, to the left of the wing, the tail-race tunnel passes beneath the house and features a segmental arch with a keystone. The left side of the building has windows on all three floors and a gable, all topped with brick-arched heads.

Inside, there is a wooden platform that supports four sets of stones, mostly still in place. This platform has a nosed edge and heavy-scantling members, two of which have shaped ends. Three sturdy splat balusters are positioned between the platform and the ceiling beams. The first floor showcases chamfered, heavy-scantling beams, and the rear wing has a collared principal-rafter roof. The second floor features pattern-beak queen-post trusses with tusk-tenoned purlins. The adjacent house displays an exposed datestone with a shield flanked by scrolls, along with numerals indicating the date at each corner.
