Description

Temperance Hall, originally known as Oddfellows Hall, is a former hall now used as a warehouse, built between 1836 and 1837 by W. J. Hindle. The building features a painted ashlar front with coursed squared rubble sides and a concrete tiled roof. It is a single-storey structure with three bays, set on a three-step podium. The central bay is recessed and has an entrance framed by an eared architrave, while the side bays contain panelled doors topped with tall overlights, all also in eared architraves. The building is adorned with a deep frieze and a simple pediment, which has plain acroteria at the eaves and apex. To the right, there is a later projecting bay that is not of special interest. The left side has eight bays with various altered or blind windows, showing significant alterations.

Inside, there is a gallery at the rear supported by two slender cast-iron columns, with pilasters marking the divisions between the bays. Some decorative plaster cornices have survived.
