Description

SE3406SW BARNSLEY PITT STREET (north side), Barnsley 9/55 Temperance Hall 16.8.77 II Former Oddfellows Hall, Temperance Hall, now warehouse. 1836-7 by W. J. Hindle. Ashlar front (painted), coursed squared rubble sides, concrete tiled roof. Single storey, 3 bays. 3-step podium. Two fluted Ionic columns in antis. Central bay, recessed, has entrance in eared architrave. Side bays have panelled doors with tall overlights all in eared architraves. Deep frieze and simple pediment with plain acroteria to eaves and apex. To the right is a later projecting bay not of special interest. Left return: 8 bays with various altered or blind windows, much altered.

Interior: gallery at rear on 2 slender cast-iron columns. Pilasters mark the bay divisions. Some decorative plaster cornices survive.
