Description

Hoyland Lowe Stand is a tower built around 1750 for the 1st Marquis of Rockingham. It is constructed from coursed, rubble sandstone and has no roof. The tower is square and two stories high, featuring a taller square stair-turret projection on the north-west side. It has large quoins and wallstone floor bands. The ground-floor openings have been altered, and the first floor has tall, projecting square-faced surrounds that are now blocked. The turret has similar surrounds for small openings that light the stair. Inside, the stone newel and the upper part of the spiral stair remain, along with brick inner arches to the tower openings.
