Description
The railings enclosing the playing field, located approximately 95 meters south of Bootham Park Hospital in York, were constructed in 1857 and are listed as a building of group value. The structure consists of a length of wall and railings that measures approximately 200 meters long and stands between 3.5 to 4.0 meters high, enclosing the north-west and north-east sides of the playing field.
The design features a dwarf wall made of red brick with a cambered coping, complemented by piers made of tooled stone. There are cast-iron carriage gates situated between rendered brick gate piers. The railings are square in section, set diagonally in the dwarf wall, and topped with spear finials. The piers are square in plan, chamfered, and taper to octagonal domed heads. The carriage gates are made of the same railings and include arcuate braces beneath the dog rail, with the gate piers also being square in plan and featuring flat caps. The railings were manufactured by William Walker of Walmgate.
