Description
The Rowntree Park Memorial Gates are a set of carriage and pedestrian gates, screen walls, railings, and terminal piers that form the main entrance to Rowntree Park in York. These gates date from the early 18th century and were installed at the Terry Avenue entrance in 1954. The screen walls are constructed of brick in stretcher bond with a flat stone coping, while the gates and railings are made of cast and wrought iron. The terminal piers are made of Portland stone and feature a concave curve in their design.
The double carriage gates and the flanking footgates include scrolled panels and mid rails decorated with arabesques and rinceaux. The supporting panel piers and cresting also utilize these decorative motifs. On either side, low screen walls support square-section railings with pointed finials, which ramp up to the gates. The rectangular terminal piers are approximately 3.0 meters high, with moulded bases and caps, and are topped with damaged figures of standing cherubs that are now headless.
Historically, these gates were acquired from an uncertain source and were established at the entrance to Rowntree Park as a memorial for the Second World War. The park itself serves as a memorial for the First World War.
