Description

This drinking fountain, dated 1880, is located on Museum Street in York. It is constructed of sandstone, featuring granite shafts and a bowl, and has a stone flag roof. The fountain has a shallow bowl supported by a squat column, which is topped with an elaborate waterleaf capital beneath a cusped pointed arch. The arch displays a dated shield featuring the arms of York and a lion mask waterspout in the tympanum. Above the arch is a steeply gabled canopy adorned with carp and fish-tail finials. The reverse side facing Museum Gardens is identical, showcasing St Peter's keys on a heraldic shield.
