Description

No. 3 Museum Street is a former house that later became a hotel and is now a restaurant. It dates from the early 18th century and has undergone some alterations since then. The building is constructed of buff-brown brick in Flemish bond, sitting on a painted rendered plinth, with a timber doorcase, a first-floor band, and boxed guttering. It features a Roman pantile roof with brick stacks.

The exterior has a three-storey, five-bay front. The wide doorcase is supported by fluted Doric columns and has a triglyph frieze with dentilled segmental pediment. The entrance has double doors and an overlight, flanked by narrow 1-pane sashes with late 19th-century coloured glass set in a screen of glazed brick. The tympanum above the door is filled with moulded figures in foliage and a cartouche that announces "THOMAS' HOTEL." To the left, there is a panelled passage door with a blocked overlight and a bracketed cornice hood. All the windows are 1-pane sashes that decrease in height on each floor above, featuring painted stone sills and flat arches made of gauged brick. There is a moulded band at the first floor and a raised brick band at the second floor.

The interior has not been inspected, but records indicate that it originally had a staircase with bulbous balusters and several original panel doors, with most remaining fittings dating from the 19th century. Historically, this house was part of Ettridge's Royal Hotel around 1800 and became known as Thomas' Hotel after it was purchased by William Thomas in 1858.
