Description
The Multangular Tower and the attached wall to the south-east are part of the defensive structures of the Roman legionary fortress of Eboracum, dating back to around 300 AD. The tower was later incorporated into the medieval city defences and was raised in the late 13th century. It was excavated in 1831 and restored in 1960. The Roman masonry is constructed from small limestone blocks with bonding courses of red tile, while the raised section of the tower is made from larger ashlar blocks. The tower stands approximately 9.5 metres high on a battered plinth, with its upper stage featuring eight faceted faces, each equipped with a cruciform arrow slit. A stub of a water spout projects from the former parapet level, and on the inner side, slits are set in pointed arched recesses. The wall, which is about 5.5 metres high, has several blocked recesses on its inner side.
