Description
32-38 St Andrewgate is a former fire station and house, now converted into flats. Built in 1845 by G.T. Andrews for The Yorkshire Fire and Life Insurance Company, it was adapted for residential use around 1973. The ground floor is constructed of orange-cream brick in stretcher bond and painted stone, while the first floor features orange brick in Flemish bond. The building has a timber modillion cornice and a slate roof with a brick stack.
The exterior is two stories high with a five-window front. Originally, there were three fire-engine house openings, which are now blocked, and these are flanked by Tuscan pilasters that support an entablature with a prominent moulded cornice. Recessed front doors at each end are accompanied by 18-pane sash windows in the engine-house blocking. The first-floor windows are 12-pane sashes with orange gauged brick arches above a stone sill band. The interior has not been inspected.
