Description

This is a Roman column located approximately 4 metres north-east of number 9 Minster Yard in York. The column dates back to around 100 AD and was originally part of the north-east colonnade of the Roman headquarters building constructed by Legion IX. It was later re-assembled and reused by Legion VI in the 4th century. The column was erected in its current location in 1971. Made of gritstone, it stands about 9.5 metres high and features a moulded base and a damaged moulded capital, all raised on a square plinth. The column was excavated from beneath York Minster in 1969 and was given to the City of York to commemorate the 1900th anniversary of its foundation around 71 AD.
