Description

No. 40 Low Petergate is part of a group of three houses and shops built around 1840, with some later alterations. The building is constructed from orange-grey brick in Flemish bond, featuring a timber shopfront and guttering. It has a hipped pantile roof with brick stacks and a rooflight facing Petergate.

The exterior consists of four storeys, with a four-window front facing Minster Gates and a two-window front on Petergate. The shopfront for No. 2 has been renewed with a plate glass window, while No. 4 retains a curved glazed and panelled double door with an overlight at the corner. Nos. 6 and 8 still have their original pilaster frames with imposts and a moulded cornice, featuring recessed glazed and panelled doors with bordered overlights in plain reveals. No. 6 has a plate glass window above a sunk-panel riser, and No. 8 has a plate glass window in a partly bricked-up opening.

On the first floor, there are 16-pane sash windows, and the second floor has unequal 9-pane sashes, with the right end window on both floors being blind. The third floor features two unequal 9-pane sashes and two squat 6-pane sashes. All windows have painted stone sills and flat brick arches, with the top floor arches obscured by guttering on grooved brackets. Between Nos. 4 and 6, a box rainwater head displays crossed keys.

The Petergate front includes a shopfront that continues from Minster Gates, featuring a 4-panel door and overlight at the right end. The first floor has a 3-light window with top-hung lights, surrounded by plain pilasters and a cornice. Other windows include a 12-pane sash to the right on the first floor and unequal 9-pane sashes on the second and third floors, with the third-floor windows being squat.

The interior of No. 8 was inspected and features a close string staircase with stick balusters, a turned newel, and a plain moulded handrail leading to the second floor. A plain fireplace with a coved moulded shelf remains in the front cellar, and the first-floor front room retains a moulded cornice.
