Description

The Minster Song School, part of a house built around 1755, is now incorporated into a school. It underwent alterations and re-roofing in the early 19th century and was commissioned by Dean John Fountayne. The building features orange-brown brick laid in Flemish bond on a chamfered stone plinth, with a timber doorcase and cornice. It has a slate roof, partly hipped, and includes a flat dormer with a 10/10-pane sash window facing Minster Gates, along with brick chimney stacks.

The exterior is three stories high with a four-window front, where the right half projects. There are cellar openings in the plinth. The left half showcases a doorcase with slender engaged fluted columns, a fluted frieze, and angle rosettes, leading to a door with six raised and fielded panels and a squat eight-pane overlight. Above this door is a 12-pane sash window, with two similar windows on the ground and first floors of the right half. The second-floor windows are squat six-pane sashes, while the left half has taller eight-pane sashes inserted. All original windows feature flat arches made of orange rubbed brick without sills, and the ground floor windows have panelled shutters. The building is adorned with four-course raised brick bands at the first and second floors, and a prominent moulded eaves cornice that continues across the right return. The rainwater goods are mounted on rosette clamps, featuring a moulded and enriched hopper with the Fountayne elephant crest, inscribed with "JF" and dated 1763.

Inside, the cellar retains a brick arched fireplace. A quarter-turn staircase connects the ground to the second floor, featuring an open string, turned heavy balusters and newels, along with a moulded and ramped-up handrail. The attic staircase has a close string, column balusters, turned newels, and a ramped flat handrail. The ground floor room is panelled above the dado rail and has an enriched fireplace surround with a moulded mantelshelf and an eared overmantel panel. The first-floor front room contains a fireplace with reeded jambs and frieze, along with rosette paterae. The rear room features a painted fireplace with a pulvinated moulded shelf, while the second-floor front room has a fireplace with a basket grate in a plain surround with a moulded shelf. Most rooms are finished with moulded cornices.
