Description
No. 3 St Helens Square is a shop and restaurant, now serving as a shop and offices, built in 1922 with later alterations. It was designed by Lewis Wade for Terry's of York. The building is constructed from ashlar sandstone and features a bronze framed shopfront and windows, topped with a shallow pitched slate roof.
The exterior consists of two storeys and an attic, with a three-bay front. It is characterized by giant Corinthian columns that support a frieze and a moulded modillion cornice beneath the attic. The attic is divided by pilasters that support a moulded eaves cornice. The entrance is located at the right end, featuring margin glazed double doors with an overlight above, set within a pilastered doorcase. The shop windows are cantilevered canted bays, with concave side lights and slender Ionic colonnette mullions. Above these windows are semicircular pivoting overlights in keyed round arches, which are behind fanlight grilles.
On the first floor, the windows are small-paned French doors set in eared architraves, which open onto projecting balconies with geometric balustrades. The attic windows are small-pane casements with leaded quarries, also in eared architraves, beneath pulvinated friezes and pediment hoods, with the central window having a segmental shape. A frieze beneath the first floor cornice over the centre bay is inscribed with the name 'TERRY'. The interior has not been inspected.
