Description
Joseph Terry House, located at Breary's Court, is a house and shop that has been converted into offices. It dates from the early 19th century, likely with earlier origins, and underwent raising and alterations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with restoration completed in 1991. The building is constructed of orange-cream brick, which was probably originally stuccoed, and features a slate roof with a brick stack at the right end.
The exterior presents a three-storey front with irregular window placement. The central entrance has a doorcase supported by fluted Tuscan columns, a fluted frieze, and a flat cornice hood, leading to a six-panel door. To the left of the entrance is a three-light bow window with a 12-pane central sash set in a fluted frame, complete with a fluted frieze and moulded cornice. There is an opening to the right of the door. The first floor has two original 12-pane sash windows, with a later inserted window at the left end. The second floor, which was added later, features irregularly placed 12-pane sashes beneath flat arches, and all windows have painted sills.
Inside, there is a closed string staircase with stick balusters, a turned newel, and a moulded handrail. The ground floor room to the left retains an arched fireplace. On the first floor, the left room has a plain fireplace with a flat shelf, flanked by cupboards with three-panel doors. The top floor features a plain fireplace with a hob grate reset in the end room to the right.
Historically, this house was associated with Messrs. Bayldon and Berry, Confectionary Wholesalers, as listed in a directory from 1818. In 1830, the company became Joseph Terry & Co., which later became known as Terry's of York.
