Description
This building, located at 3-9 Minster Gates, consists of five houses that have been converted into three shops. It dates from the early 18th century, with some alterations made in the early 19th century and further modifications later on. The front is constructed of orange-brown brick in Flemish bond, while the rear is in stretcher bond. It features a timber doorcase, shopfronts, and a cornice, along with a hipped roof covered in tiles at the front and pantiles at the rear. The roof has brick stacks and gabled dormers that contain 2-light Yorkshire sash windows.
The exterior has three storeys, cellars, and attics, with a six-window front facing Minster Gates and a three-window front facing Minster Yard. The shopfronts at Nos 3 and 5 have paired designs with sunk-panel pilasters, a plain fascia, and a cornice. The doors are half-glazed and flush panelled, with overlights above. The windows are made of plate glass over louvred risers. The shopfronts for Nos 7 and 9, which extend onto the Minster Yard front, are shallow square bay windows topped with pent roofs and feature either small-paned lights or larger replacements below, with boarded risers. The doors here are also glazed and panelled, accompanied by small-pane overlights.
On the first floor, there are five 16-pane sash windows and one 12-pane sash window, which has a wrought-iron anthemion window guard. The second floor features five 12-pane sashes and one 16-pane sash. All windows have narrow painted sills and flat arches made of gauged brick, although the second floor is partially obscured by a prominent moulded cornice. A raised brick band runs across the second floor on the Minster Yard front. This front also includes a doorcase with pilasters, moulded imposts, and a cornice, leading to a door with six raised and fielded panels and a divided overlight. To the left, there is a 12-pane sash window. The first floor has 16-pane sash windows, while the second floor has 12-pane sashes, with two being blind. The cornice continues from the Minster Gates front.
Inside, Nos 7 and 9 still have a cast-iron range with a basket grate in a plain fireplace, complete with a moulded shelf on the ground floor.
