Description
The Broughton War Memorial, designed by architect Dosser in 1923 and featuring a sculpture by Gilbert Bayes, is a significant structure commemorating those who served in the Great War and subsequent conflicts. The memorial consists of an inscribed octagonal Portland stone plinth, which is set on a circular base and octagonal step. It is situated on a raised paved area, which is overlooked by a Portland stone sculpture placed on a rubble stone plinth at the rear. The structure is framed by wing walls that form the back of the paved area.
The front face of the octagonal plinth bears the inscription:
'TO THE GLORY OF GOD IN HONOUR OF THE MEN OF BROUGHTON WHO SERVED THEIR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 AND IN EVER LOVING MEMORY OF THOSE WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN'
The names of the fallen from the Second World War are inscribed on the flanking faces, while the rear faces list those from the First World War. The memorial features a notable sculpture by Gilbert Bayes, depicting a seated British soldier in contemplation, with one hand supporting his chin and the other holding a laurel branch, backed by a rubble stone wall.
