Description
Churchgates is a house with origins in the 17th century. It was raised to two storeys in the 18th century and extended to the left in the 19th and 20th centuries, with renovations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of roughly-coursed limestone rubble, featuring brick stacks and tumbling on the right gable, with brick dressings and a brick addition to the first floor on the left. The exterior is colour-washed, and it has a pantile roof.
The layout consists of three rooms with a lobby entry to the left, and a single-room addition to the left. The house has two storeys and four first-floor windows. It features quoins and a 20th-century fielded-panel door, flanked by two 16-pane sash windows on the right and two 12-pane sliding sashes on the left, all set beneath wedge lintels. On the first floor, there are 12-pane sliding sashes with lintels at eaves level. All windows are from the 20th century, with those on the first floor set in brick surrounds. The building also has a 20th-century moulded wooden eaves board and features axial and end stacks. The right gable end shows the profile of the original single-storey tumbled brick gable.
