Description

This is an early 19th-century windmill tower, now incorporated into a house. The tower is constructed of brown brick with some traces of tarring, and it has a fibre-glass covered cap. It is a four-storey, tapered round tower. Full-height windows have been inserted into the original segmental-headed ground-floor openings, which are unsympathetic to the original design. 20th-century casements are set within the original segmental-headed windows on the upper floors. A dentilled cornice runs around the top of the tower, surmounted by a dummy ogee cap with a breast beam, shaft, and skylight. A 20th-century addition to the east is not considered to be of particular architectural interest. The windmill operated using wind power until the early 1930s, and ceased operating completely around 1960. In 1980, some machinery was removed for reuse elsewhere, including an iron bridgetree which is now located at Bardwell Mill in Suffolk.
