Description
Farmbuildings. Dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, these brick farmbuildings with pantile roofs form a U-shaped arrangement, enclosing a small foldyard to the west of South View Farmhouse. They consist of a barn/stable/granary range to the north, a stable/granary range to the west, and a stable range to the south.
The north range is composed of two buildings: a low, two-storey threshing barn and an adjoining stable/granary with a higher two-storey section to the east. The north side of this range presents a board door beneath a segmental arch, a pilaster strip, and a single breather slit to the left; the stable/granary section has a board stable door flanked by breather slits, a small slatted wooden hatch, and a later board stable door with a small breather in a blocked opening to the right, also overhung by a slatted wooden hatch. Stepped eaves are visible on both stable/granary sections, along with tumbled-in brick to the raised gables. The left gable end features a board door beneath a pair of breather slits and a blocked attic door, marked with wrought-iron letters "W M". A segmental-headed door and hatch are present on the north side of the barn, with a later six-bay implement shed outshut supported by wooden piers.
A western stable/granary range has a central two-storey single-window section flanked by single-storey ranges. The east side features a central section with a board stable door beneath a segmental arch, flanked by small rectangular breathers. Above, there is a first-floor board door with a cat-hole and a glazed hatch under a segmental arch. The lower range to the right, adjoining the barn, has a stable door and a single slatted wooden hatch also beneath a segmental arch. The west side has a row of four small breather holes to the central section, with a board hatch door above and a pair of breather holes to the left.
The single-storey south stable/stalls range has a two-bay open section to the west and stables to the east. The north side showcases a single brick pier, three board doors (one beneath a segmental arch), a single slatted wooden hatch, and a breather slit. The left gable end has a pair of board doors beneath a timber lintel, with an angled corner at the foldyard entrance topped by a hipped roof. The south side has a series of small breather holes below eaves level.
Together with the farmhouse to the east, these farmbuildings represent a well-preserved example of a small late 18th and early 19th century Axholme farm. The farmbuildings are included for group value.
