Description
The Old Smithy is a 19th-century smithy with earlier origins, built for the Duke of St Albans Estate, and has undergone 20th-century renovations. It features coursed limestone rubble with limestone ashlar dressings, a brick plinth, and a timber portico with a weather-boarded gable on the left, topped by a Welsh slate roof. The building is designed in a classical style and consists of a single room with a portico to the left, open to the south front and gable end. It is a single-storey structure with the entrance facing south. The plinth is complemented by ashlar quoins, and there is a wide entrance with an ashlar surround beneath a re-used timber lintel. A cast-iron tyre-bender is attached to the wall on the left.
To the left, there are two timber columns on padstones that support a timber wall-plate. The right side features an end stack and an axial stack with decorative caps. The right return has three timber columns on padstones that support a pedimented gable, which has a wooden pedestal above bearing a carved anvil in relief and a carved wooden leaping horse approximately one metre high. At the rear, there is a blocked central opening with quoins, which contains a casement with glazing bars. The open section includes a board door to the smithy and a 20th-century timber seat. Inside the smithy, there is a brick and stone floor, along with a pair of brick hearths that have chimneys and stone troughs.
