Description
Killingholme High Lighthouse is a lighthouse established in 1831 and rebuilt in 1876-1877 for Trinity House. It is constructed of brick, rendered, and colourwashed, featuring a six-storey tapered round tower that stands 30 metres high. The ground floor has a recessed plain door beneath a timber lintel, along with two recessed louvred openings. The second, third, fourth, and fifth floors each have two or three 12-pane sash windows with projecting cills and recessed lintels. A moulded cornice supports a balcony on the top floor, which is enclosed by plain iron railings. The top floor includes a plinth, an incised band below the cill band, and a wide east-facing window with vertical glazing bars. The roof is topped with a ribbed dome featuring scalloped eaves, a cylindrical ventilator, and a weathervane. A stack on the south side has a stepped cornice and four cylindrical pots.
On the north side, there is a plaque inscribed with details about the lighthouse's enlargement and rebuilding by the Trinity House of Kingston upon Hull in 1877, along with names of wardens and information about other lighthouses in the area. Although the lighthouse is no longer manned, it is still used alongside the nearby Killingholme South Low Lighthouse to guide shipping in the Humber. In the 19th century, it served as a link in the Hull Telegraph.
