Description
This is a pair of houses built in 1796, located approximately 210 metres south of the Church of St Bartholomew. They are constructed from brown brick and feature a pantile roof. Each house consists of two rooms and a rear outshut, and they are single storey with an attic, having four windows in total. The front has a pair of board doors in the centre, flanked by pairs of 12-pane sliding sash windows, which were boarded up at the time of the resurvey. These features are all set beneath painted segmental arches. A central datestone is present, along with a pair of circular tie-bar ends. The eaves are corbelled brick, and the raised gables show tumbled-in brickwork. There is a central axial stack, and each gable has a single attic window: a 20th-century casement on the left and an original 4-pane sliding sash on the right. The interior was not inspected. This pair of houses is a good example of 18th-century freeholder's cottages and, along with the cottage to the north, represents the best surviving examples in the Axholme area.
