Description
The Belwood Obelisk is an obelisk, likely built in the mid to late 18th century for Alan or William Johnson of Temple Belwood. It is constructed of brown brick with sandstone ashlar dressings. The structure features a brick pedestal with a plain ashlar base and cap, topped by a brick obelisk that has a pointed ashlar cap. The south side of the obelisk has three rectangular openings, which are somewhat damaged and likely served as nesting holes. The overall height of the obelisk is approximately 10 metres. It is reputed to have been built in memory of a favorite horse and hound. At the time of the last survey, the obelisk was in serious disrepair.
