Description
This is a house dating from the early to mid-19th century, located on North Street in West Butterwick. It was incorrectly marked as number 9 on Ordnance Survey maps. The front of the house is built of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with stone dressings. The sides and rear are of yellow brick, and the roof is covered with concrete tiles. The house is arranged in an L-shape, consisting of a two-room front with a central entrance hall, and a single-room wing to the rear left.
The symmetrical front elevation has three bays and two storeys. The entrance is framed by a painted ashlar surround featuring Tuscan columns that support an entablature with a moulded cornice and blocking course. A half-glazed panelled door is set within a panelled soffit and reveal. The original ground-floor windows are unequal 15-pane sashes, set within architraves and reveals, with sills beneath channelled, cambered wedge lintels featuring fluted keys. The first-floor windows are 12-pane sashes in matching surrounds. A wooden eaves cornice and gutter run around the front and right return. The gables are stone-coped, and the end stacks have cornices with recessed panels. The right return displays red brick quoins and an unequal 9-pane sash window set beneath a cambered brick arch.
Inside, there is an open-well staircase with turned balusters, along with moulded plaster cornices.
