22/78 Screen wall approximately 60 metres north of Redbourne Hall
GV II
Screen wall. Early C19 for Duke of St Albans Estate, with earlier section adjoining to north, probably of late C18 for Carter Estate. Early section in roughly-coursed limestone rubble, later section in brick with squared limestone facing and ashlar dressings. L-shaped on plan: east-west section approximately 30 metres long, with section adjoining at right angles to north approximately 10 metres long, continued by section of earlier rubble wall approximately 4 metres long. Situated to north of Redbourne Hall and forms screen wall for passage linking The Cloisters and the Hall garden; faces north, towards Redbourne village. Main C19 section, approximately 3 metres high, has arcade of pointed arches on square-section buttressed piers with coped offsets and stepped-in upper section with gabled coping: 12 arches to east-west section, 3 arches to north-south section. Earlier adjoining rubble wall to north formerly linked with The Cloisters Ruin (qv); the intervening section was demolished c1980. Arcaded wall is contemporary with screen wall to north of Wood Rising (qv). Adjoining walls to east are not of special interest. Included for group value.
