Description
F W McAulay Cottages are almshouses built around 1920. They are constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and feature pantile roofs. The building has six tall square brick stacks and is designed as a single storey plus attic structure with a 17-bay front. The central three bays project slightly and are topped with a large Dutch gable. The central doorway has an overlight and an ashlar surround with a flat hood, linking it to an upper sash window that is adorned with a curved, broken pediment. On either side of the doorway are single glazing bar sashes.
To the sides, there are slightly set-back six-bay wings, each containing six glazing bar sashes and six raking dormers, each with a small glazing bar sash. At both ends of the building are symmetrical pavilions featuring a central glazing bar sash flanked by narrow sashes, with a single small glazing bar sash above in the gable. The rear facade is similar in design but includes a Doric colonnade that connects all the cottages with a covered walk. The eastern pavilion houses the Trustees Meeting Room, which has an ashlar bolection mould fireplace and a simple exposed queen post roof. Some cottages still have their original Royal Doulton tiled fireplaces. These cottages were built in memory of F W McAulay, a Captain who died in action at Fonquervillers, France, on May 21, 1916, at the age of 25.
