Description
This memorial, located approximately 140 metres south of the Cemetery Chapel in Grimsby, was created around 1895 to honor Sir Henry Bennett. It is made of granite and features a dwarf-walled tomb enclosure topped with a Celtic cross that stands about 3 metres tall. The front of the cross shaft displays a unique motif of realistically carved serpents entwined around groups of balls arranged as crosses, with some serpents depicted holding bones in their mouths. The left and right sides of the shaft are adorned with interlace patterns. The cross-head includes interlace designs, decorated balls, serpents, and pairs of pumas or lions. An inscription at the foot of the shaft commemorates Sir Henry Burnet, Kt, who lived from 1827 to 1895, along with his wife Sophia, who lived from 1833 to 1895, and their daughter and son. This memorial presents an unusual interpretation of the Celtic Cross tradition.
